Q: Do I have to pay to send my child to this school?
A: No, Desert Learning Academy provides a free education to all students registered.
Q: If my student is in special education can he/she attended?
A: This school is for any student. Students on an IEP need to meet with their IEP team and discuss the least restrictive environment for the student. If that environment is the Virtual School they are more than welcome.
Q: Can my student take more than six courses in a year?
A: Yes, after they have displayed that they can work in an online environment without issue and the teacher and the administration both feel that this best supports the student’s goals.
Q: Can my student take a seventh course if they complete one of the six courses early?
A: Yes, after a student has completed a course and they have time to complete another course during the same year. Both the teacher and the administration would review the student’s progress.
Q: Can my student participate in extracurricular events at their home school?
A: CIF Southern Section bylaw 302. INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM, states there are possibilities for students to attend the virtual school and play sports at the school of residence.
Q: Will students be allowed to take Career based Courses?
A: Yes, work related courses for students that are at least 16 years old.
Q: If my student goes to this school will they be able to get into college?
A: Yes, all courses are UC approved. However, some UC schools differ in their acceptance requirements. Students should check on which school they might want to attend.
Q: If my student goes to this school will they be able to get into the military?
A: Students wanting to go the military will need to first attend at least a semester of some college before being accepted.
Q: Can I take my student with me on vacation for a month and miss on campus sessions?
A: Yes, students needing to go on long trips or work related issues can go. Parents and students need to communicate with the teacher and the school so accommodations can be worked out in advance. Students will be expected to stay current with online curriculum.
